On July 11, 2011, heavy explosions on the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base near Mari, southern Cyprus, killed 12 people, injured 64 and severely damaged the adjacent Vasilikos Power Station. Wildfires have led to the denotation of a confiscated munition storage. The power station which provided about 50% of Cyprus’ electricity supply has been knocked out causing widespread power cuts on the island. On July 19, 2011 the GMES SAFER mechanism was activated through the MIC on behalf of National Focal Point for Cyprus. Very high resolution optical satellite imagery were ordered. The first DLR/ZKI map showing the damage situation was provided on July 19, 2011. ZKI provides the maps in the framework of GMES Emergency Response project SAFER with funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme.
