Since October 2022, the cyclonic season impacted thousands of people across Mozambique. After storms and heavy rain, coastal areas of southern Mozambique were hit by severe floods, especially the province Maputo. Roads have been cut and houses damaged. Cyclone Freddy could exacerbate this situation.

DLR scientists calculated the total flood duration between January 1, 2023 and February 22, 2023. The flood duration product is based on flood masks extracted automatically from 62 Sentinel-1 images acquired in this time frame. By computing the duration of the flood over a period of several weeks, it is possible to identify areas that are affected by long-lasting flood-water.

The analysis is complemented by a seasonal reference water product based on Sentinel-1 time series data (994 scenes), visualizing the usual water extent during non-flood situations in February.
