After heavy rainfalls between March and May 2023, Somalia was hit by widespread floods. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 460,000 people have been affected within the last two months by this disaster.

The Center for Satellite-based Crisis information (ZKI) of DLR created a map for this disaster, for the first time based on data of the German hyperspectral satellite mission EnMAP in the frame of the International Charter of Space and Major Disaster.

This map product illustrates the flooding along the Shebelle river on May 29, 2023 in the Hirshabelle State of Somalia. The flood extent is derived from data of EnMAP using a deep learning-based methodology. EnMAP data also serve as backdrop of the map.
